Microphone Setup and Troubleshooting

Set up your microphone for Scribenote and troubleshoot common audio and recording issues.

Updated today

In most cases, you won’t need an external microphone to use Scribenote. The built-in microphone on your device should work great by default.

If you’re unsure about your setup, you can test your microphone here.

Using Scribenote on a Computer

If your computer has a built-in webcam, like most laptops do, it also has a built-in microphone, so you’re all set.

If your computer does not have a built-in microphone, you’ll need to connect an external one to record audio. For clinic setups, a conference room microphone in the exam room is often a good option.

Using Scribenote on a Mobile Device (phone or tablet)

Your device’s built-in microphone should work well with Scribenote.

For best results:

  • Place your device in a central location during the appointment

  • Avoid putting it in a pocket or covering the microphone openings

Working in a Noisy Environment

Scribenote is designed to handle background noise such as:

  • Constant buzzing

  • Background chatter

  • Dogs barking

It may occasionally have difficulty if multiple conversations are happening very close together. Even in those cases, Scribenote focuses on capturing relevant medical information for your note.

Troubleshooting and Testing your Microphone

If Scribenote isn’t picking up audio as expected, try the following:

  1. Run a microphone test.

  2. Check browser microphone permissions.

    • Make sure Scribenote has permission to access your microphone.

    • Click the icon next to the URL in your browser and ensure microphone access is enabled.

  3. Confirm the correct microphone is selected in Chrome.

    • Google Chrome may default to the wrong microphone, even if you’ve selected the correct one before.

    • Follow this guide to check your settings: How to Check Your Chrome Microphone

  4. Check for competing Bluetooth devices.

    • Nearby Bluetooth devices can sometimes take over audio input.

    • Disconnect any unnecessary devices and try again.

  5. Close other apps using the microphone (mobile/tablet).

    • On mobile devices, other apps can take control of the microphone.

    • Close any unused apps and retry your recording.

Once everything is set up, run a quick test appointment to confirm your audio is being captured clearly.

You can review the recording afterward by opening the note and listening back.
